Arc'teryx Atom AR Hooded Insulated Jacket - Men's
Arc'teryxAtom AR Hooded Insulated Jacket - Men's

All-around insulation for the ascent.

A down jacket may seem like a good call when it's cold and you're getting gear ready at the trailhead, but you're going to be a hot, sweaty mess by the time you're on the trail and your heart rate is up. The Arc'teryx Men's Atom AR Hooded Insulated Jacket insulates when you're getting gear lined out for the day's objective and remains breathable during the approach, so you aren't stuck with a soggy, useless down jacket before the sun is even up. The Atom is insulated with Arc'teryx's Coreloft insulation, which consists of highly crimped and siliconized polyester yarns that are breathable, packable, and water-resistant to retain insulating capabilities when confronted with light precipitation. If it does start to rain or snow, then the Atom can be worn comfortably as midlayer under a shell for an added dose of warmth.

  • All-around midlayer for the trail, skintrack, or crag
  • Water-resistant synthetic insulation is highly breathable
  • Durable Tyono fabric treated with DWR for added weather protection
  • Compressible design packs away for easy storage in a backpack
  • Can be worn as a midlayer during cold ski days or rainy hikes
  • Vancouver-based Arc'teryx uses the mountains of British Columbia to inform its clothing designs

best all around jacket I own

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

This jacket can be worn when it's 20 and it can be worn when it's 65. The combination of the shell and ventilation makes it the most diverse jacket I own...and I own a lot. It is SO light, that it can easily be worn under a jean jacket if your doing your outdoor garage (or lumberjack) work. If you come in from the outdoors, and want to continue wearing this indoors (where it's a little cool) it's perfect. (e.g. hockey games). Also very comfortable driving in it. . It is also insanely packable. (I have worn this jacket all winter...but only as an urban warrior, and not using it as a lumberjack or snow boarder

I wear a medium in EVERY other coat I own...in this one, I'm a large.
The zippers are not high quality.

Quality Jacket

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: XL

I bought this jacket hoping for something warm to wear on my morning walk with my dog in the harsh Michigan winters. Jacket totally fit the bill. I am 5'9" 195-200 so I'm borderline Large or XL in most jackets. The XL fit was just right for me. With this jacket- just enough room to feel comfy. I really loved the jacket- but ordered the red.. The pic on the internet led me to think it was more of a brick/dark red... upon receipt the jacket is very bright red. Sounds picky... but I just din't care for the color. Other than that.. excellent jacket, very warm, comfy, looked and felt like it would hold up to wind and rain/ wet snow.

Great!

Super Warm and Light! Odd Sizing

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: Large

I will admit that I intend to use this jacket for urban purposes 80% of the time. My Large weighs in at 480g and is impressively warm. I love the cuffs they create and attractive smooth and comfortable seal around the wrist, very clever design. I wish they had applied the same concept to the bottom as the hem bunches awkwardly with the slightest pull on the cinch cords. The hood functions nicely with a cinch cord that functions well.

As another review I read mentioned, it does seem odd that the jacket will unzip easily if you pull the sides apart when partially unzipped. Perhaps this is intentional, I would welcome a comment if someone knows why it does this.

My biggest criticism is the sizing. I should fit easily into a medium which was the first size I ordered, but the forearms were way too tight, I could not comfortably wear anything but a t-shirt or fitted base layer under it. Also the back did not seem quit wide enough for me to cross by arms without feeling it pull. I ordered the large and its arms and back are perfect but of course the waist and midsection is considerably looser than I would like. On the bright side I can now comfortably fit a fleece layer under it. I just find it odd given that I am fairly modestly built and that it is a regular fit, that the forearms and back would be so restricted.

To sum it up, I love the jacked but if you intend to wear this jacket with regular street clothes around town, or as an outer layer with a fleece, I would recommend ordering a size up.

      My Bestest Jacket!

I can't say enough good things about this jacket. It's light enough to be a heavy mid-layer but can stand on it's own in the cold if needed. I happen to be the friend mentioned below who looks forward to the cold so I can put this baby on. It's great! Do yourself a favor and get one. A small worked great for me

      My Best Jacket

This coat is my go to coat and i love it. I've worn it several times in very cold conditions without any layers on top and have still been warm. If you're looking for a daily coat or a warm midlayer, this is a great option. While it's expensive, it's worth the money. Make sure to check out the size chart when you are ordering the coat. The arms on Arc'teryx jackets are typically a little long. My medium fits me great! A friend recently purchased this coat due to my suggestion and said that he looks forward to cold days so that he can wear this coat.

Best synthetic in my gear closet

I picked this up for a trip to Patagonia, where down might have been a disaster given all the rain, and was not disappointed. Positives:

      1. The fit is great. Fortunately Arc'Teryx hasn't succumbed to the recent trend of sizing for the more rotund. It's large enough to fit over a light fleece layer, light enough to fit under my rain shell, and retains a nice athletic fit.
      2. The materials and finishing are top notch.
      3. It performed flawlessly given my expectations for a synthetic insulation layer in these conditions.

What's not to like? The price. But I guess you get what you pay for...

      Unanswered Question

Would this work as a suitable outer layer winter jacket for a typical Minnesota Winter? (Ranging from 32 to -15 degrees (F) with wind). If not, which Arc'teryx jacket would you recommend for those conditions? (under $400)

I got this jacket for warmth at hiking breaks and camp duty. The southern Appalachian mountain winters tend to be cold and wet or really cold and windy. This jacket is the lightweight tool to handle it. Wonderful warmth in the core and plenty in the arms. I was leery of the one-string hood, but it fits great. My favorite feature is how the collar fits - it gently curves from the neck up over my chin, keeping out chilly drafts. Rare is the jacket that fits so well in that regard!

So why 4 stars instead of 5? The one thing that drives me nuts and makes no sense is the lack of a lock tab on the zipper pull! I open it half way while doing while doing photography or camp chores and the jacket will unzip to the bottom. Why did they choose a zipper pull with no locking tab? It's not about weight or cost. I have a Marmot jacket of similar weight, same type of coil zipper other than it has a lock tab on it. I may just put a zipper pull on myself with a lock tab, but when I pay for a primo jacket I want it to have ALL the features!

So, 4.5 stars for the Atom AR. Despite the zipper, its still the best!

Amen Bro! Arc should be smart enough to make a great zipper if they can make everything great...I know they have to text the gear. It bothers me b/c the wind blows and it unzips my zipper!!!

I lost this jacket, tried to go without it, I failed. I just bought my second. It's that good. Warm, great fitting, light and compressible! Can you ask for anything else. I have my beacon on under the jacket in the pic. It's a trim fit but it's done right.

I got a small which may not have been the best decision as it seems like these fit a bit small. also the front was athletic fit and seemed pretty shot on me. I would get your normal size or size up if you're looking to get this. The insulation and warmth is amazing and I'm reordering a medium in a different style which I hope works out much better.

This is great for around town or cruising up some mountains on a cool day. Insulates well for the weight and has surprisingly durable outer material for the feel of it. One of the best apparel purchases I have made.

It's amazing how much warmth you can get out of such a compact jacket, I simply love this thing and it's been my go to for a couple of years now. For me, layering isn't just a good idea, it's absolutely necessary - I sweat when I snowboard, and I tend to get very cold when I get to a location for shooting landscapes. This is a perfect layer to provide most of my warmth and to help me manage my body temperature without cooking me when I'm exerting. Everything is so well thought out, from the cuffs to the hood and the inside pocket (great for keeping a smart phone and a couple of camera batteries from freezing). My only con is the athletic cut front, and this is personal preference, and is also not a deal-breaker. My fleece/hoody/underlayers stick out front at the bottom, but my shell always covers all of that if I'm wearing it. In summary, this thing is incredible, so just get it if you're thinking about it - you won't regret it.

I already own the Atom LT and wanted to get a little bit more warmth. This one sure fits the bill and then some. It has double the insulation over the LT.

I would say if you plan on layering, go with the LT fleece option and don't under estimate how warm you will be when you first put this on. This is more my daily jacket then a technical piece based off the warmth factor.

I'm 6' at 165 lbs and went with a Large. Fits me perfect! Arc'teryx nailed the fit on this one! Highly recommended.

      Awesome jacket

Fits well and is very warm, if its really cold and windy you may want to put a shell on but most days its just fine without.

        Atom AR

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

        • Size Bought: Medium

My AR just came today. I will update my review after I take it to the mountains in the coming months. However, this sale prompted me to buy this jacket, and I imagine other people are looking at it too.

My initial impressions are positive. The medium fits my build well. I was on the fence about ordering a small or medium. For reference, I have a 100 weight mountain hardware fleece pull over and a size small marmot minimalist shell. I also have an older north face Denali fleece in a size small.

Anyways, my vision with this jacket is to be able to layer it with the 100 weight and or a light down vest in ultra cold conditions. Because of my interest in layering it and my broader shoulders I went for the medium. Layered with the marmot shell, the jacket fits well. The tail/ bottom of the jacket sticks out maybe a half inch below the shell, but not an awkward amount.

Just putting the jacket on in the house lead me to being almost immediately too warm.

As a follow up, I just took this jacket to the Sierras in the middle of April, and I am still impressed. The jacket kept me comfortable in camp as the sun went down at 11,000 ft. I also took the jacket to the summit of a 14,000 ft peak the following morning. My core stayed warm, and the hood fit my helmet well.

I've been searching for my insulating layer for some winters now, and I've finally settled on the Atom AR. Partially b/c Arc'teryx fits my build the best out of the major brands. But also the weight to warmth ration fits my needs during cold and windy Michigan winters. I do layer the Beta AR when it starts dipping below 35 degrees and I must say it's a inspiring combination. I would also recommend this over the Atom LT if you're planning on wearing this in ~35 degrees or less. I've tired both and the little bit more $ is worth the warmth by far.

        Huge Fan of this Jacket

Another great product by Arc'teryx. This jacket is great for all types of occasions during colder months. Great for active wear as well as can wear out to casual occasions. The athletic fit is great to allow range of motion.

One hoodie to rule them all...

If you've never bought an Arc'teryc item, then this one will definitely have you saving up every paycheck to fill your wardrobe with everything this sell. No one matches their build quality and comfort/functionality... no one!! Warm, light weight, fits like a dream.... with that said for taller slender people it will fit great but is a little shorter in the front. Great if you're belaying someone and need access to your harness.
