Horrible belt system

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M short

I've had many Arcteryx goretex pants and this, by far, is the worst design for putting them on and off I've ever seen. The similar model that had the belt with plastic buckle, full side zip and trimmer pant cuffs (no inner ankle protection) are far superior as a year round pant, unfortunately I can't find them anymore. This seems to be the replacement design so I gave it a shot. Relying on the side zip to be your entry and exit for pants is very awkward and the side stretchy belt hooks do not stay hooked in their loops. Sitting and standing will result in your side belts coming unhooked and then its only time before your side zipper is working its way south. The 'cut' of the pants are a bit baggy but the waist is true to size. The thickness of the pants makes them a bit crunchy sounding. If I didn't need to wear them every day at work at the resort I'd have returned them immediately due to the hokey belt closure system.

WATER PROOF

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: large

I bought these pants for a trip to iceland that I had this winter and they were more than amazing. We were stuck in the cold for days on end hiking and Northern Light Hunting and they kept the warmth in and the wind and water out. They were super light and breathable, so I was never overheating when we had been on the trail for a while! These are definitely worth the purchase!

Ice Proof

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought these as a gift for my boyfriend and this is what he had to say:

"I used these pants for a recent ice climbing trip and their performance was outstanding! They pack down relatively well for living in my pack on the approach and are a breeze to put on over mountain boots and soft-shell pants. The Gore-Tex waterproofing was very reliable for belaying and climbing in the splash of the melting ice formations. These pants feel like they were made for my legs, and they handle the movement of hiking and climbing without any snags or lifting. Im wearing 32x32 Prana Stretch Zion pants under the shells and you can see that the soft-shell pant doesn’t fall out the bottom of the shell or interrupt the fit in any way. The cuff fits very well over mountain boots, but will not even come close to fitting over ski boots. I nicked these pants with my crampons once and they didn’t even scratch. I wouldn’t say that they are indestructible by any means, but I’m impressed with how robust the cuff material is for the pack size and weight of these pants. Breathability leaves a little to be desired, but with full length side zips, temperature regulation is pretty easy. I’ve tried on several other pairs of lightweight waterproof shells and sent every other pair back.. these ones absolutely knock it out of the park! I’m 6’0, 185 lbs with fuller legs and I’m wearing a medium regular. My normal soft-shell pant size is 32x32"

Kept me dry in Walleye weather

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: L/Tall

I was in search of a heavier weight gore-tex rain/all weather pant that was also packable which would be primarily used during my annual walleye fishing trip to Northern Ontario. The pants pack down very well into my boat bag and getting in/out of the pants, even with layers on, is very easy due to the full pant zips on each side. This past fishing trip, we had a couple of days straight of rain/wind, wore these all day and I stayed 100% dry (paired with a Stio Modis jacket - which I also highly recommend). When the rain/clouds broke - the weather remained cool due to the cold front that moved through with the rain. The pants held up to the constant wind for the rest of the trip/kept me warm and the gor-tex material shed water/fish slime well from the constant barrage of catching walleye and dealing with the occasional large Northern Pike. I typically wear a size 34 for my jeans, but I wanted a bit of a larger fit so I went with the Large/Tall size - which is the exact fit I wanted.

Worth It.

Great buy! Feels great ice climbing and bagging snowy peaks.

Light and Simple

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I wanted a lightweight and easy to pack shell pant with full side zips for mountaineering to make it easy to put the pants on without taking off my boots and crampons. These pants are great for that. They pack down super small and are hardly noticeable in my pack.

Awesome, lightweight shell

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M Tall

These pants are awesome. Gore-tex paclite is so incredibly durable for how lightweight and breathable it is. I usually wear this in combination with the ALPHA SL jacket for a wide variety of things. Snowshoeing, Skiing, Trail Running in adverse weather and wind, hiking and camping.
Both the pants and jacket are perfect to bring with you in your pack on any outdoor excursion in case the weather goes south, they're so pack able and lightweight you barely notice them.
I recently did a 150 mile bike ride and had these in my pack and sure enough when it started raining I was able to pop them on quickly and avoid being drenched.
One last great thing about these pants is that the can be completely put-on and removed due to the side zips.
One last, last thing is for me to comment on durability. I often wear these bushwhacking in the back country with my snowshoes as well as along river banks when I'm scouting rapids I'm about to run with my kayak. I've probably put them through more abuse than they deserve but after a year there are still no holes or other signs of wear and tear.

Are you convinced yet?

Keeps the elements out

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M/Reg

I picked up a pair of these bad boys so that I can snowshoe, cross country ski, and backcountry ski all in a single shell. I love the lightweight and packable construction of the pants, thanks to the goretex paclite material, which allows me to move with ease and stow the pants even easier if the weather is nice. Perfect lightweight shell for tame outdoor excursions

Need 3-way zipper

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large Tall

Wanted to love these pants, but the side-zips are inadequate for my purposes. If you need them for easy on and off with boots they will work great, but if you are hoping to use them for venting, look someplace else. With only a 2-way zipper, you can only vent from the top by the waist band, or the bottom by the boots.

Awesome

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: xl

Wore in 50 mile per hour winds, rain and snow on Rainier. Stayed warm and dry. Fit was fine, was able to put on with boots on easy. I am a 36/32 in jeans and bought an XL. They fit me slightly on the big side but overall fit was fine over my soft shell pants. Large's were too restrictive for me so the XL provided better room for walking, climbing and glissading. I have also warn these to my favorite sporting events

Perfect minimal shell pant

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: large

I wanted full side zip pants I could put on or take off under any conditions (boots, harness, etc) in a weight that made sure they were always in the pack. These deliver on all fronts, and are exceptionally well constructed, extremely water and wind proof, have many well thought out design features for a minimalist pant (front zipper). Lack of a front button takes some getting used to, but the side hook attachment means you don't end up with a fat wad of built up material under your pack strap. Although the material is rigid, I find the range of motion adequate for uphill steps without noticeable bind (typically my biggest complaint in hard shells). I thought these were a little snug for an everyday ski pant, but would not hesitate to throw in the pack for a spring tour. Used these working all day in the rain, skiing all day in the snow, sitting through a rainy football game, hiking in the cascades. 4 thumbs up.

potato sack, not athletic cut pants

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Size Bought: S and M

VERY DISAPPOINTING pants due to 1) very hard to get on (result of no front button, hard to close zippers) 2) restricts movement (result of poor design - no articulated knee or gussets) 3)weird fit (too much slack in back, would think same for everyone). 4) no pockets. Don't believe the hype for Arcteryx. People must be impressed just because of high price tag. Critical people will be underwhelmed with this. Didn't use it but spent a lot of time trying it on, trying everything to make it work. Neither S or M would allow good movement. (Old Moonstone pants so so much better.) Good: boot lace clips hide well when you don't want them, that's cool.

Versatile Pant

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

The full length side zippers are completely solid, and the fit was true to size. So far, they have held up well in heavy rain, wet snow and moderate winds.

good fit

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

gave this as a gift and they are waiting to use them in a climbing trip but they have a good fit. Will update with performance

They keep you dry.

I wore these in 60 mph winds with rain / snow. My legs were completely dry

    Growing Room

XXL Longs will fit you if:

      You are around 6 foot 8 - 10.
You have a waist size of at least 40 inches.
      Your hips(buttocks) are extremely full
You don't mind having alot of puffery around your knees.

The pants are top quality and will be your go to pants if the above sounds like you.

My 6 foot 7 inch, 36 waist, 36 inseam was not enough to fit into the XXL longs... this time.

Excellent use of "puffery," I'm dying over here :)

sometimes Erin, a word describes a thousand pictures. Puffery, is one.... :)

      good for bike commuting

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Small

After looking high and low for a pair of good, slim-fitting rain pants I could use for getting to work on my bike in the rain, I settled on these, without trying them on. Not bad for the occasional rain use.

The fit is a little strange, as other have pointed out. I'm about 5'10, 160lbs, usually wear a 32x30 pant size, and got the small. It fits snugly in the waist over my jeans, with a little stretch from the elastic in the waist. I'm actually really happy with how they fit in the waist, seat, and thighs. Very slim, not a lot of extra fabric or bagginess. The closure system for the waist works well, and is less goofy and more low-profile than having plastic buckles on the front, like some of Arcteryx's other pants.

From the knee down to the ankle though, they are pretty baggy. I'm used to wearing skinny jeans, and I knew they wouldn't fit that slim, but there's really a lot of extra material around the ankle that doesn't need to be there for any reason, except for those hikers that feel self-conscious wearing tighter clothing. Seriously, this is supposed to be Arcteryx's lightest, fastest, most trim-fitting pants, and there's probably an ounce of material they could get rid of here, and at the same time keep me from catching the pants in my chain when riding my bike or dragging on the floor when I walk, which brings me to my next quibble...

They are way too long. For someone wearing a small pant, I feel like I'm hardly on the short side, but these are about an inch or so longer than I would have expected them to be, maybe more like two. I know there's a short version, but it wasn't available when I bought these, and I didn't want to risk getting the short and having it be too short. The pants seem made for someone who is a 6ft+ beanpole, which is what the tall sizes are for, right?

Performance-wise though, they are excellent. The fabric feels VERY durable, much more so than the Alpha SL and Beta SL jackets I own, and the extra-durable parts in the ankle are really nice. The pants repel water well, and even after wetting out, nothing gets through. I'm very pleased with these as far as waterproofing, and that's why they'll get 4-stars, they do what they advertise.

They do tend to get hot, like any waterproof layer, but a little sweat is better than a lot of water, so they're worth it. Typical Arcteryx build quality and performance, just not the fit I was hoping for.

I had considered getting the Beta AR pants as well, for the extra durability, but after seeing those in-person, they were VERY heavy, definitely more of a winter-use product with gaiters and more features. The Alpha SL is more than durable enough for occasional rain use.

non Alpine non rain outdoor activities.

Alpha SL Pants on top of Kilimanjaro!

      Bombproof

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

What can be said about these pants that hasn't already been said about the man of steel, bombproof and amazing! These are the last Hardshell pants you'll ever want to own. I've worn them in every condition from single digit temps while trekking in the Wasatch during a blizzard to mobbing around the lowlands in monsoon like rains and they've haven't let me down once. The taped vents don't let a single drop of water in, the kick pads on the bottom resou ist nasty crampon assaults like a champ and the adjustable waist keeps them feeling oh so comfortable all day long! And with the full body zips you can get these things on or off without ever having to take off your boots. With that being said, I'd highly recommend these for any serious alpinist!
