Alpha FL Jacket

Lining up 12 pitches in a day is a serious endeavor, and while you'd prefer to do it in perfect weather, sometimes that's not just how things go, so you need an ultra-light rain shell like the Arc'teryx Alpha FL Men's Jacket. The lightest Gore-Tex Pro jacket that Arc'teryx makes, the FL (Fast and Light, if you were wondering) is the speed demon of the climbing-and-alpinism-oriented Alpha series, with a lightweight 3-layer design, waterproof and breathable membrane, and taped critical seams to keep you dry without any extra bulk.

Unlike average shells, the FL is designed specifically with climbers in mind. It has a trim fit to eliminate any extra material, and an e3D ergonomic design that's articulated in all the right places to facilitate climbing movements The slim profile also makes it easy to see your harness, so you don't waste time and energy trying to grab piece of gear from it, while the removable HemLock foam hem inserts keep your jacket from sliding up under your harness and leaving you exposed. The helmet-compatible StormHood adjust with a single-handed pull, and the entire package stuffs into the included stuff sack and clips onto your harness with a webbing loop, making it easy to carry and quickly accessible when the clouds gather.

  • Complete protection from the weather in a lightweight package
  • 3-layer Gore-Tex fabric provides breathable, waterproof defense
  • Harness-compatible design ensures you have full range of motion
  • Regular fit has room for layers without being too baggy
  • Helmet-compatible hood doesn't compromises safety in weather

Wonderful jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

I’ve worn this jacket as a snowboarding shell, snowshoeing, mountaineering, and ice climbing and it has not let me down. I have broad shoulders and the large fits great with a baselayer, Atom AR, or down puffy under it if needed. The large trim fit is just a little more voluminous than my medium Alpha SV which is the regular fit. The length is very similar. It is very waterproof and wind proof as advertised and breathes well. The hemlocks work quite well also. I hope it lasts for several years!

Wonderful jacket

Money!

Gave as a gift but have heard some feedback. This is a super light, waterproof, VERY PACKABLE jacket. He initially used as a later during a touring session and said it was the perfect jacket for the trip. Gore waterproof seals the deal here and you can never go wrong with any Arc'teryx products.

    The Perfect Gore Tex Shell

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Medium

I finally broke down and bought this for couple of years ago, and couldn’t be happier! Everything you need, and nothing you don’t. Perfectly designed. The sleeves run a little long so they stay over your gloves when your hands are above your head, the hood is easy to adjust and fits over a helmet, and just one breast pocket—perfect for a phone or a bar. The jacket breathes really well and has held up to abuse. It even has little foam pieces to help keep it tucked under a harness. It rocks!

I’m 6’1”, weigh about 170 and got the size medium. I wear it over an R1 Hoody and a light top and it fits like a glove.

Agreed--nailed it again, Stan! Thanks for touching on features that are stand-outs for this lightweight, technical shell with its activity specific design.

    Great Fit And Functionality

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Size Bought: Large

First off, I am an athletic 242lbs at 6'3", and the Large is a great fit, but with a very thin layer underneath. I am buying the XL for those times I will need more layers underneath. I have used in significant downpours over the last two months, and the jackets is fantastic. I have yet to be let down by any of my Arc'teryx products so far.

An added note, the colors displayed in the photos are not how they will appear in person. They are not as vibrant and bright...

    YES!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Best jacket I own today. Look good and feels great. Moves very well when swinging axes.

    Absolutely in love

    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

Best shell i have ever purchased and amazing for backcountry snowboarding. Super light with only the pocket you need (be honest with yourself) great hood and packs tiny tiny so bringing it Japan was amazing. The fit is great, i'm 6' 185 and fairly muscular usually where a medium in shirts and the large is perfect. Enough room inside i can fit a down jacket under it for extra warmth but not so huge there is material flying around everywhere. I suggest this jacket to everyone who asks, which is all the time. If only it wasnt so damned expensive for so little material.

Ultralight, durable GORE-TEX® Pro jacket for alpinists who climb fast and light.

    Best in Class

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: small

There is no better lightweight GoreTex jacket on the market. You get full Goretex Pro protection in a minimal and sleek package. I use this for everything; hiking, fly fishing, climbing, splitboarding, and mountaineering. It has withstood deluges of rain, horrible blizzards, and been with me to the summits of several mountains.

The fit is a bit unique but not unlike the rest of the Alpha series, although the torso fits a bit more slim. Don't worry about not having pitzips, you don't need them. I regularly wear this on the skin track up and it breathes just fine. For the price I cannot find a better jacket and have tried many. Be aware that it is not cut for the ski resort, but if you need a four season jacket for every type of alpine adventure this is the ticket.

    Arcteryx Again

My last Arcteryx jacket, a Sidewinder, is still quite waterproof after 15 years. But my new Alpha FL is everything I wanted and have come to expect from Arcteryx. It is light, no pit zips or hand warming pockets, perfect ski coat with great features. Waterproof enough for a snow day, warm enough to layer underneath. This coat will become a staple on the boat in the spring. Why did I wait so long? Nice job Arcteryx!

      Swiss Army Jacket

This is my go-to for ice climbing, ski touring and as an emergency shell. It has a nice long cut which I like when I'm climbing and it wont come out the bottom of my harness. Its super simple, velcro cuffs and the hood and face coverage is amazing, especially with a helmet. I'm 5'11" and 155lbs and went with the MED. I'm super happy with the breath-ability and wind/rain protection. I'd only suggest the Alpha AR if you want a lot more thicker protection, but I use this shell more due to the need for both protection AND breath-ability.

      Swiss Army Jacket

      LOOK NO FURTHER

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

They (Arc'teryx) definitely make THE BEST hardshells in the market. I have both the Alpha FL and the Alpha SV and love them. I have to say though that my favourite one is the Alpha FL. I work as a professional outdoor guide in the Andes of Peru and over the past years I've tried several rain jackets from different brands. The Alpha FL fits perfect, it is packable, VERY light and rough.

The only downside for most will be the absence of ventilation pit zips, but if you use an adequate layering system underneath the shell you won't be clammy nor heat up as much!. Hand warmer pockets are also absent, which, unless you want to use this for wearing around town, should not be a problem. Personally, I never used the handwarmer pockets of my other jackets because when i'm on the go, I generally have my hands busy holding the hiking poles or a camera. If you tend to get cold hands easily, then just get a pair of softshell gloves + liner to have both hands warm and operating.

The Alpha FL will be perfect for most people. Is good for hiking, backpacking, traveling, etc. Just get this jacket. You won't regret!. This garment is designed to be worn with a base layer plus a midweight insulated layer. If you intend to wear it using more than 2 layers underneath for freezing winter conditions, then go one size bigger than usual.

If I had to choose ONLY one hardshell, this would be it! Is just perfect for any outdoor adventure where you want to have reliable potection without carrying a bulky/heavy jacket!

      I love this jacket

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Size Bought: Large

This is agreat jacket for several reasons:
      - ultra light
      - awesome color (Rohdei green)
      - good sizing (nor perfect)
      - great material
Now, I wish you could collapse it into the chest pocket, instead you have a little bag attached that can be easily lost if you are not careful. I totally trust this jacket, at 40 miles winds and frozen rain it was a bomber.
It fits a little big when using it without any layers but it's perfect on top of my fleece and my down jackets.

      Redesigned Alpha FL

      Initial impressions

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

I just picked up the new version of the Alpha FL in the Stingrey colorway. First, the color is way better than I initially thought it would be. It stands out without "standing out" if that makes any sense. 2nd, the previous iteration was a fantastic piece and while a lot of the improvements won't be totally noticeable, the one that stood out to me was the cinch system on the hem. It's super easy to use and should work really well keeping it under a harness(I've always loved the hemlock feature and this is essentially a substitute for that). The hood is also easy to adjust and fits incredibly well over my helmet. Next, the 3 layer construction, 40D face fabric, and weight make this a super functional and packable, yet durable piece. It weighs less and packs up smaller than my Paclite rain shell, which is pretty nuts. Sizing: I tried both the Large and the Medium and ended up going with the M. It's a really good fit that allows for adequate layering but isn't bulky when just wearing over a tee. The L was a bit long at the waist and way too long in the arms. I'm 5'10 175 and my arms are as long as I am tall. Super excited to use this for alpine season and into touring season next year and will update when I get some real use out of it.

Stellar review....thanks! Uses, size you bought/tried on along with your height/weight...made is super easy to dial in the size I need...thanks!

.Hi, Geoff! just wondering if this jacket could keep me warm together with arcteryx's base layer in around -5C to -10C. Many thank!
