An alpine specialist.
From winter ascents in the North Cascades to technical ice routes in the Canadian Rockies, the Arc'teryx Women's Alpha AR Pant handles all of your tool-swinging and French-stepping needs. Being a member of Arc'teryx's Alpha line, this pant has an alpine-specific design geared towards ice climbing and general mountaineering. Utilizing a Gore-Tex Pro Shell, which is one of the best waterproof and breathable membranes available on the market, the Alpha AR provides reliable waterproof protection when you're confronted with unpredictable alpine weather and warming ice. The shell's fully taped seams feature a low-profile design to minimize weight and bulk, which is especially valuable when you're packing for a month-long expedition.
Arc'teryx is known for making simple and efficient pieces of clothing, and the Alpha AR is no exception. A full-length side zip offers quick and generous ventilation when you need to dump excess heat, and the integrated waist belt and suspenders allow you to make quick adjustments to the fit. The athletic fit with e3D patterning makes wearing a harness more comfortable, while articulated knees and an inseam gusset promote mobility when climbing vertical ice or mixed routes. Arc'teryx even equipped the pant with an internal LegWrap to prevent crampon snags when you're walking or climbing. Durability is a must for whatever piece of gear you take into the alpine, so Arc'teryx reinforced the Alpha AR in key areas to boost the overall durability of the pant and added super burly Keprotec instep patches to resist wear from crampons and ice shrapnel.

These pants are amazing... Honestly amazing. The best shell out there (at least that I have found to date). I am blown away at the detail, care, and thought that went into these pants. They fit quite well and feel great. I am 5'4" and 125lbs and bought a size small and was originally worried when I first tried them on because they are a little baggy in the lower legs due to width and length. I was concerned that it might cause some snagging on crampons. Due to the awesome nature of these pants and Arcteryx thinking of everything, here is why that is not an issue:
⢠On the inside of the pant is a Velcro strap just at the knee that pulls the inside of the pant in toward your knee. This takes extra fabric to the outside of the leg, to keep all the extra fabric out of the way for mountaineering
⢠That internal knee strap can be released to have enough room for ski boots. Easily done without having to remove the pant or shoes because of the ¾ zip sides.
⢠The base of the pant can synch down around your ankles to prevent snow from getting in, acting as a gaiter, great for glacier travel, and yet another preventative measure to keep from snagging your crampons on the pants.
⢠The inside of the pant legs are reinforced as well to prevent snagging.
⢠The suspenders are removable
⢠The pants sit comfortably on your waist rather than your hips (another great feature for keeping snow out, and a more comfortable natural fit)
⢠Potential for crampon snagging, if proper care is not taken (as stated above)
⢠They are long and wide in the leg; Factor in your mountaineering or ski boots when thinking of sizing. (I have the La Sportiva Nepal EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Women's which work great, height wise)
⢠They have enough space for thick layering.
⢠XS would have given me enough room for some thermals, but with the Smalls I would be able to fit a pair of down pants underneath for really cold days.
⢠Even with the loose fit it has a flattering touch to hug the curves just right so you can climb in style.
Do yourself a favor, if you want to get a good pair of mountaineering/ski/ice climbing pants get these, you will not be disappointed.
