Grit Your Teeth and Go.

The trail leading to the top of Mount Olympus gains over 4,000 feet in elevation in less than four miles. Not only that, but the trail is also exposed, grueling, and technical—in other words, it will kick your butt. So, perhaps the terrain context will shed some light on the inspiration behind Altra's Olympus 2.5 Trail Running Shoe for Men. Designed specifically for tough, gritty climbs and exhausting descents, the Olympus 2.5 owns technical terrain and gives it a run for its money.

The 2.5 edition of the Olympus features minimal changes, and it is equipped with an updated upper for enhanced longevity and specifically designed to prevent blowouts. In keeping with Altra's original design, the Olympus is fashioned with a Zero Drop platform, which places your heel and forefoot at the same height for a natural stride. Meanwhile, the dual-layer EVA foam midsole and energetic A-Bound foam reduce impact and increase return energy at each step-off. Altra also added a comfy Contour footbed for even more cushioning, because 4,000 feet of technical terrain can really do a number on your feet.

To top it all off, the Olympus is outfitted with a Vibram MegaGrip sole, which utilizes a trail-specific Vibram rubber that is mapped to support the bones and tendons in your foot. A FootShape toe box also lets your toes spread out naturally to ensure stability on rugged terrain. On top of all that, Altra equipped the Olympus 2.5 with a quick-drying and durable mesh to ventilate and keep your feet cool, and a Gaiter Trap to accommodate gaiters without having to wrap them around the sole of your shoes.

I do all my road running in size 9.5 Paradigm 2.0s. Do you think I should size up to a 10 in the Olympus?

Couldn't do it

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I could see how some people would like this shoe, but wasn't for me. Felt like I had on a pair of high heels...I mean, what I imagine high heels feel like.
They felt pretty unstable on steep, uneven terrain and I'm kind of surprised I didn't roll my ankle during the two or three times I took them out for a spin. Would be better suited for fashion models on the runway.

Used them hiking 100 miles on JMT

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 11.5

Used these shoes to hike 100 miles on the JMT. These were the most confortable shoes I have worn and I tried a lot of different pairs. Great for cushioning so your feet aren't sore. I recommend ording 1/2 size bigger as they do fit smaller than most shoes.

My dad's trail shoe of choice

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got these for my dad. He runs ultra trail marathons and he has been in love with the Olympus models since the start. He has the 2.0 and decided to give the 2.5 a try. He definitely chooses these over the Altra Lone Peak as that model gave him some foot pain. He is an old man with some picky feet so he's particular about what he runs in. But with the Olympus he swears by their performance and comfort for knocking out those big miles. He also sizes up from his street size in these because he has lost a lot of toenails over his running career and Altras sized up a half size have solved that problem for him. The Olympus are the trail version of the Paradigm, which my dad loves for road.
