Looks great after abuse

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Not sure at first how much I would use the duffel, but I LOVE it. I bought the XXL bag and can fit all my smaller bags inside for big trips. I have stuffed my sleeping bag, tent, climbing gear, clothes for 2, and more all in then strapped it to the top of the car. Best purchase ever

one bag to rule them all.

Marry Poppins has nothing on this bag. In fact, pretty sure they patterned it after hers. The storage space is incredible for all the sizes. Opening is accessible. and fabric strong and durable.

    Perfect Travel Duffel

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This duffel has been amazing for everything from camping trips to airline flights. I purchased the small and find that it can fit under the seat on an airplane if needed. I most often wear it as a backpack when traveling but it is also easy to carry as a duffel.

    Perfect size!

I love these North Face duffels. I have a few of them in different sizing. Mostly the two largest sizes which I have used for years with traveling. I use one for all my gear and another for everyday clothing or essentials. I recently picked up the medium size and it is the perfect go to size for every day use. The backpack straps and waterproofing make it super easy to take everywhere. Love it!!!

      Stores Nicely

The additional strap can be used to store them, folded in half. Two mediums will pack inside the 22 L Rolling Thunder Carry On.

      Purdy Sturdy

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Only 4 stars cause I haven't use them on a plane much, yet. It's a sturdy bag though, and can hold a lot. I got the medium, so almost 70 liters.

It has one mesh pocket on the inside. The straps are super handy, in the airports and what not. The straps are also pretty easy to take off, when not in use.

another this I really adore about these is that I can fold them in half and secure them with the straps, to store them.

The photo I pasted has by ski gear: boots, helmets, gloves, hats, coats, base layers. It's the perfect size for all of this.

Sweet Pack! Great carry on Size

Sweet pack just took it 14 days in Guatemala. Perfect size carry on and duffle for backpacking around.

Congrats on your trip! Sounds beautiful. What size did you take?

        Legit. Cannot get more durable.

Okay, let's be real. This bag is legit. The perfect travel bag, car camping, climbing, alpine, ski bag, and much more. Finally decided to get myself one after getting my friends and family one. Was a bit jealous of theirs. The side and mesh pockets are perfect. The outside loops are nice. The best part besides the durability/waterproofing is the straps so you can wear it as a backpack. The only issue is the zippers are a bit tough to zip.

Size medium is a great overall size. Get size medium or large.

        Bulletproof

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

        Summary:

Do not cringe at the price of this bag; this bag will last you forever. The material/fabric is very thick and rigid. The bag I almost rubber coated on the outside making it fully water proof. The zippers are crazy big! These must be the biggest zippers I've seen on anything. It has enough internal pockets to provide organization but is not overwhelming. Some of these bags have so many compartments you can lose your stuff, I hate this. $ or 5 ways to carry the bag. I just keep grabbing for this bag for every use. So Far it is my daily gym bag, my airport luggage, my snowboard bag.

I want some of the other sizes for other uses!

        Replacement

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This bag is a replacement for a TNF XXL duffel bag that I purchased back in 2004. The original bag has traveled from North America, Central Mexico, South America and Alaska. It served me well for many years. During the summer it has served as my gear bag while being deployed on wild land fire assignments. It has survived weather of all kinds and more airports and flights than I can count. My old bag is still functional, other than some general wear and tear, the only issue is the PVC coated fabric is pulling away from the zipper seam.
My hope is that the quality of my first TNF duffel that is more than a decade will continue with my new one.

        Super sturdy, but flaws.

Talk about sturdy! This is an extremely well-constructed bag. I used this bag when I went to NY for a week, and I was able to shove so much into this bag. But the bag definitely have flaws. For one, once it was packed with stuff, it made it really hard to use it as a backpack. Or am I using it wrong? Despite being full of things, the bag would 'bend' in the middle when I try to use it as a backpack, making it really uncomfortable and unbalanced. So instead, I would have to tighten the straps and just carry it with my arms. It wasn't as comfortable to carry as I thought it would be, based on all the positive reviews that I've read, so I was very disappointed with this purchase.

Hi,Ryan. I got a XL duffle and used it for a few times. I'm 6'1 and approximately 200 lbs weight, it's just too bulky to carry it, even with a duffle strap attached to the handles. But the way I used it is simply carry it from one car to another. For my perspective, you don't need to use it for weeks trip, like an alpine climbing trip, which you need to take everything with you. For that case, you would need two of these bombers. But if not, I think a medium or large is huge enough for carrying as a backpack. And note that I've seen many people use a frame sheet from other bags (put into the mesh pocket inside). Hope this helps

          Great For Everything

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I use this bag for skiing, biking, camping, and general travel. The XL is great for long trips when you are hauling a lot of gear. The large gets the most use for me and is great for skiing and biking. The material it super tough and the zippers are burly. I'm very pleased with these bags

          Great for traveling and camping!

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love this duffel bag. I can take it anywhere and it fits everything I need. I love that it's water resistant as well. The material is great and doesn't tear easily. They come in awesome colors as well and that's always a plus.

          On My Second Bag

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I think it is safe to say that if you are looking for a durable, tough duffel bag that can carry pretty much anything, this is the bag for you. They come in the size you need for everything from an overnight trip to a full on excursion, and they come in a ton of different patterns and colors. I have a S and now a M to handle weekend trips and use for my ski bag in the winter. I have had no problems with the durability of my first bag, even after beating it up for a year it still looks new.

          Years and Years

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought one in gray topographic map print in 2009! It's been through airline luggage more times than I can count, rolled around in my truck bed filled with ski gear for 5 busy ski seasons in CO, and it hasn't frayed at a single point on the duffel. It's been seemingly brand new for years

I was totally going to return this...

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was going to return this. I thought it may have been too big or bulky or just wouldn't fit the bill. I thought the backpack conversion for the XL size probably wouldn't work. I even contacted backcountry.com and had the shipping label and everything to return it- but it seemed so well made...and it was a giant bottomless pit and appeared very durable. So I didn't return it. This has been the absolute best duffel. I travel internationally as an outdoor adventure guide. This bag holds everything!!! The zippers are strong, there is even an area on the bag for airline ID. The backpack function isn't only functional but comfortable. I really, enjoy this bag and am so happy I didn't exchange it. It has become one of the workhorses in my arsenal. perfect for long road trips and seasonal work as well. I really want to get the next size down for shorter trips- the bag is fantastic! I couldn't decide between the patagonia and northface giant duffels but after doing A LOT of research I am very glad with my decision.

          Tough duty gear bag

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This bag is amazingly durable and will stand up to most all abuse, beyond what you would think a duffel should take. Made of very heavy material and very solid handles and backpack straps. Zipper is seriously one of the heaviest duty zippers I've seen on a piece of luggage, but also what makes it a bit stiff to close. Wouldn't make sense though to have a flimsey zipper on such a burley bag.

          Bombproof

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

TNF kills it with the base camp duffel. I have one in the Small, Medium and XL. All different colors. The XS, S, and M will work at carryons. The backpack straps come in handy when you need them and stow away when you don't!

Let me know if you have any questions on these!

          Rugged Quality

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I got sick of dealing with a bunch of cheap duffels that constantly fall apart. When preparing for a recent Iceland trip I decided to buck up and get one of these NF duffels(L). It has the perfect amount of room for multi-week trip abroad. It has quality construction so I don't have to worry about it falling apart when spewed out onto the baggage carrier. I can stick a tripod or trekking poles in it without worrying about them poking through the sides. The backpack straps are nice for carrying it, but I wish they also provided a single should strap as on option too.

          Awesome duffel

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Used for mountain bike high school racing. So it is subject to a lot of abuse and needs to be waterproof. Great to carry everything for my daughter. Main zipper is a little difficult to close but otherwise perfect bag.
