Addicts, all of us

Today's Deals on Steep and Cheap:
I feel like I can empathize with powerful addictions to drugs, sex, or alcohol
because I've been through it all with Chapstick. I started young on the ceramic jars
of Carmex. They say that your lips stop producing their natural moisture when you
use Carmex, which makes you use it more and more until you're caught in a vicious
cycle where you're waking up in the middle of the night to slather on the stuff. My
friend Luke tried quitting Carmex once and it was hell. His lips were so chapped
that they looked like a baboon's chapped ass, but he thought that once his lips
started naturally producing moisture he'd be free from carrying Chapstick in his
pocket for the rest of his life. He was off the stuff for a couple weeks, but it
didn't last--it never lasts.

Cell Phone Tests
Tuesday, July 15 2008, 05:50 AM
Today's Deals on Steep and Cheap:
I have this theory that half the men in my generation will develop some form of
cancer around their groin. It'll come from carrying a cell phone in your pocket.
Mind you, this theory isn't based on any scientific or common sense principles--it's
based on a fear of technology. It's that feeling that something's lurking just out
of sight, and all of these wonderful things we've made to simplify our lives will
one day sneak up and pull a plastic shopping bag over our heads. I also don't trust
milk that comes from cows shot up with rGBH growth hormone. I'm all for better
living through drugs, but there's something about tricking an animal's body into
producing too much milk that makes me feel like nature's going to cut our lives
miserably short for thinking we've outwitted it with synthetic hormones.

The Pencil Sharpener
Thursday, July 10 2008, 05:07 AM
Today's Deals on Steep and Cheap:
The Pencil Sharpener was a real hub of activity in elementary school. A custodian
installed one in a dusty corner of each classroom, and it would handle abuse of
bratty children for decades. Few teachers held up as well. The wooden trim around
the chalkboard in one of my classrooms had actually been worn away from kids' hands
constantly rubbing against it while sharpening pencils. Forty years of pencil
sharpening will do that to a chalkboard. It would have made a great example of
erosion when the 3rd grade teacher was talking about the Grand Canyon. Nowhere was
the pencil sharpener more important than my first through third grade classrooms. We
were forbidden to use pens during these years, so everyone in the class relied
solely on the pencil sharpener for sustenance. There were two kinds of pencil
sharpeners: one had a rotating face plate, and one with a spring-loaded clamp arm.
The rotating plate sharpener used different sized holes for varying pencil sizes; it
would be set on 'standard' once and never need to change. The spring-loaded version
was a lot more fun, but ultimately less reliable for a quality sharpen job.

People who are new to e-mail
Tuesday, July 08 2008, 04:28 AM
Today's Deals on Steep and Cheap:
I sometimes forget that there are still people out there who don't understand
what's going on with e-mail. You know the type; it's the relative who asks for your
e-mail address only to flood your inbox with forwarded messages of gerbils dancing
and other clever animated gifs. I avoided this kind of interaction for a long time
by giving out an old Yahoo! e-mail address to people I suspected of this behavior,
but now I embrace it. For one thing, it's tough to find e-cards, so there's less
worry that you'll get spammed by an online company that encourages the one greeting
that's lazier than giving someone the finger. Plus, with oil climbing above $140 a
barrel and a man poised to become president who represents the deepest fears of a
small cross section of the country (and seemingly the same people who are just
figuring out how to use e-mail), you're bound to get some interesting e-mail
threads. The forwards themselves aren't very entertaining, but eventually someone on
that list won't be able to resist the urge to "reply all," and then all hell will
break loose. I swear, it's harder on families than incorrect answers on Family
Feud.
Today on SteepandCheap we have some Kavu Men's Chuckanut Shorts for $20 and some
Sugoi Men's 42K Shorts for $12. We also have some Arc'teryx Women's Theta SK Pants

I Work for the Internet
Monday, July 07 2008, 04:26 AM
Today's Deals on Steep and Cheap:
No one was on the internet this weekend. Did anyone else notice that? My Google
Reader usually cranks up to 1000+ if I leave it alone for 10 minutes, but it didn't
get to over 800 new items since Thursday afternoon. It's tough to tell when there's
no one home on the internet since everything's always lit up like it's supported by
a staff of thousands. One of the peculiarities of working at an internet retailer
was seeing that sometimes there was only one guy working. He'd be sitting at his
desk when I arrived in the morning, kind of like he was the captain of a ship and
the only one who hadn't jumped into a life raft when everyone thought it was going
down. Then I had to be the guy who arrived in the morning and climbed back on board,
tail between my legs to start staffing the internet again. It was always fun to tell
people that I "worked for the internet" when they asked what I did. Hell, someone
needs to be back there turning the Internet Crank.

Above the law
Tuesday, July 01 2008, 03:47 AM
Today's Deals on Steep and Cheap:
Nobody thinks the law applies to them personally. We're all guilty of it. One of
my teachers loved to tell a story about a girl who'd convinced her teachers to give
her "Incompletes" instead of "Fails" so that she'd be able to keep her grants. The
free money was contingent on receiving passing grades, and she lied to her teachers
about handing in the missing work in a few days. My teacher pointed out to her that
she was guilty of defrauding the school of several thousand dollars by lying about
the intent to turn in work. She could go to jail. This is the kind of thing people
are talking about when they say, "Some laws were meant to be broken." I don't think
she should go to jail for convincing her teachers to give her passing grades, but I
also don't think it should be illegal to borrow a neighbor's internet or drive as
fast as you want everywhere all the time. In fact, I'm absolutely certain that the
skills the girl used to persuade her professors to give her "incompletes" are much
more valuable than any of the knowledge she could have gained by doing the
homework.

It's Weird that I'm Not in a Cover Band
Friday, June 27 2008, 04:26 AM
Today's Deals on Steep and Cheap:
I used to think cover bands were the lowest form of art. Now I consider them a
reasonable substitute for bands that are too cool to play their old hits or carry on
even though several of the original band members have died. It's also much cheaper
to see cover bands and there are usually drink specials. The lowered drink prices
are crucial since it's important to use alcohol to aid in the suspension of reality
while you watch four skinny guys in argyle sweaters belt out the Blue Album start to
finish. I only like the cover bands that play songs from one band. When you get into
a situation where there are seven or eight people on the stage covering 80's hits or
Top 40 from the disco years, then you're just setting yourself up for disaster. It's
like admitting that you haven't even been trying to listen to new music for the last
30 years.
Today on SteepandCheap we have some Blurr Men's Deviant T-Shirts for $11 and some
Patagonia Men's Sea Grass Sandals for $19. We also have some Reef Men's Leche Libre
Polo Shirts and Blurr Women's Silvia Shorts.
Salt Lake Bikes
Thursday, June 26 2008, 04:31 AM
Today's Deals on Steep and Cheap:
In Salt Lake City some people literally don't lock up their bikes. I'd go to the
library and there'd be a whole corral of bikes by the entrance just resting on their
kickstands. It was really confusing the first time I saw it because I didn't know
what was holding them up; it looked like a modern art piece, and frankly, I thought
it fit in pretty well with the design ascetic of their fantastic library. I
compulsively locked up my bike is Salt Lake in spite of the free spirit so many
cyclists there exhibited. I've only had one bike stolen, and it was in fourth grade
when I left it unlocked. I'm not sure if it was taken out of my garage or, more
likely, I rode it to school in the morning and then walked home after class because
I'd forgotten that I'd ridden it there. Either way, not locked up.
Today on SteepandCheap we have some Oakley Monster Pup Sunglasses for $43 and
some Ibex Women's Pingo Jackets for $78. We also have some Swix Economy Wax Irons
and Scarpa Men's Tornado LE Alpine Touring Boots.
Please Advise
Wednesday, June 25 2008, 04:27 AM
Today's Deals on Steep and Cheap:
Lately a lot of people have been signing work e-mails with "please advise"
instead of "thanks" or "sincerely". They don't use it all the time, but only when
seeking help or resolution to some kind of problem I created. Here's some advice:
Stop signing your e-mails "please advise." You sound like an idiot. My advice is
that you quit your job because you're terrible at it and your condescending "please
advise" signature that you use when e-mailing people about their mistakes is making
everyone sick.
Today on SteepandCheap we have the Giro Fuse Audio Helmet for $127 and the Sugoi
Men's Basic T-shirt for $11. We also have some Big Agnes Sunnyside 2-Person 3-Season
Tents and CamelBak Catalyst Hydration Packs.
