The Universe and Infinity
Friday, September 19 2008, 04:22 AM
Today's Deals on Steep and Cheap:
There's this theory that if the universe is infinite then it would statistically be a sure thing that not only are there other worlds out there--there are other worlds exactly like ours in every way. And beyond that, there are other worlds that are identical in every way except for one tiny difference. For example, in this world you're reading my e-mail sitting at your desk, but in another world an exact replica of you is reading an e-mail that an exact replica of me sent, except that the e-mail has a comma in the wrong space--stupid replica of me! Anyway, I really enjoy this theory of the universe, and I fall back on it from time to time. In some other universe the guy like me is having way better luck and didn't forget to bring his bike lock home. Also, in some universe far, far away, The Green Bay Packers have never lost a game. Granted, it's statistically unlikely, but we're dealing in infinity here, but what I can't accept is that there's a universe where the Vikings have ever won a Super Bowl.

8th Grade Civics
Tuesday, September 16 2008, 04:38 AM
Today's Deals on Steep and Cheap:
The impending collapse of the world financial market reminded me today of the book report I gave on the stock exchange in 8th grade. My friend Trevor asked a well-reasoned question about blue chip stocks at the end, and my entire knowledge base of blue chip stocks came from the Shaquille O'Neils film debut Blue Chip, of which I'd only seen the poster and not the movie. He immediately realized I didn't know the answer and told me just to forget it. It was too late to save my good grade, but I take small comfort knowing that his team lost the Jeopardy-style quiz I set up to test how closely the Civics Class had paid attention to my report. The winning team got some kind of candy and the losing team got Circus Peanuts, because Circus Peanuts (and Good n' Plenty) are the only kind of candy that's worse than no candy.

The Problem with Music
Friday, September 12 2008, 03:42 AM
Today's Deals on Steep and Cheap:
I wish I'd never seen the feature on iTunes that counts how many times you listen to each song. It's turned my music listening into a competition with myself to see how cool I am. Do I listen to The Cure too much? I say Bob Dylan is my favorite musician, but do the numbers support it? Bringing numbers into music is like keeping track of stats of the women you date--sure you could do it, but it's just dirty. Whenever you look at someone's Top 25 played songs, they always have an excuse for why it's so heavy in dance songs or sad ballads about shipwrecks. I need to figure out a way to turn that feature off before I end up hating all my favorite music.

Generation Bike Helmet
Thursday, September 11 2008, 04:44 AM
Today's Deals on Steep and Cheap:
My generation was the last one that didn't wear bike helmets. They started closing in at the end of our childhood, and I remember a poster some health teach harbinger of Generation Bike Helmet put up in our middle school cafeteria. It sought to encourage kids to wear bike helmets but listing excuses children would offer for not wearing one and then soundly rejecting each excuse in a one-sentence zinger. The naive child on the poster would say something like, "I like to feel the wind in my hair," and the poster would respond with, "The wind will be the last thing you feel before your scalp is torn off by the bumper of an El Camino." The poster went on in this regard for some time. The kid on the poster did not think to offer my excuse: Bike helmets cost about $100 and my parents' great health insurance will pay for me to live in assisted living the rest of my life but it won't pay for a helmet. Of course, helmets are cheaper now, though I suspect middle school public service posters and preventative health insurance plans are still pretty bad.

Hot Sauce That's Too Hot
Wednesday, September 10 2008, 04:20 AM
Today's Deals on Steep and Cheap:
There's a hot sauce so hot that you're not supposed to use it. This is a sad thing for me and humanity in general. On some level I think the production and sale of a hot sauce too hot to eat is a microcosm of what's wrong in the world. My friend bought his dad such a hot sauce. You were supposed to be able to dilute it and then put small amounts of the inferno sauce into vats of chili or salsa. My friend's dad put it on his eggs. I wonder if it had a flavor or just tasted like chemical burns. The story ends well though because a diluted mixture in a spray bottle coated the walls of their garage and got their two monster dogs to stop eating the drywall.
