    I was at the dog park with a friend, and a woman approached us and asked my friend if she could throw the ball he was holding to his dog. He'd just finished telling me about the ball. Apparently this ball had some special properties that ensured it would have a long life even in the jaws of his ferocious dog. His animal companion looked up at the woman who was holding the ball, and then she wound up and tossed it. It sailed over the fence, a row of parked cars and didn't hit the ground until it was bouncing into traffic. She shurgged and walked off. I wouldn't expect her to offer to pay for the ball, but I would expect her to have some vague notion of how hard you can throw things and how far they will go. It still baffles me that someone could live on this planet for more than 12 years and not figure that out.
