SOG Powerlock

I have also owned both Gerber and Leatherman tools and the SOG destroys them. This think is so awesome. It is the best tool I have ever owned (and that is a long list). The only down side is that the case it comes with is crap. I will have a leather worker make up a new case. Other than that, this tool is the best.

I have owned 2 leatherman and 2 gerber tools. The SOG is by far the best of all the multi tools I have ever owned. It is the heaviest, but it is also the most functional. This is a 5-star tool, except that the leather case is junk. I am having a leather worker build a new one (15 bucks). But as far as the tool goes, this is the best.

Best Overall Multitool

After much research and use with various multitools hands down this one takes the cake. The hinge system for the pliers is amazing. It generates more power and torque than any other multitool. The build quality is superb. The V cutter is actually more useful than I ever thought. It tears right through those plastic wrapped packages without any resistance. The additional features are fantastic depending on what application you need. The only minor issue is the weight, it is very heavy, due to its quality build, worth it in my opinion. Overall this is great best of the best hands down.

Fantastic multi-tool SOG

I love this thing. I have used many of the attachments, and all are solid. I carved my kid's walking stick with it, from a tree branch using the saw, knife, file and pliers. I use it for cooking and cleaning fish. Very sturdy, and does not feel flimsy or weak. Made of steel, and comes in a nice little belt clip. SOG knows how to make a useful tool.

i have the one with the v cutter and without the scissors. any job with little trouble. the v cutter is useful for opening packages or any other application where it would cut, a good second option to the knife. a little on the heavy side, but wouldn't leave home without it.

Hefty multitool

This is my first good multi-tool. I got tired of using smaller ones that sometimes couldn't get the job done. I was surprised at how heavy it is - not in a bad way - feels very solid and you know you have something that will last. Of course it has a ton of nice features and the pliers are super strong. The hinge design seems pretty well thought out. It opens smoothly and easily - one handed if needs be. I use it in dusty, sandy, southern UT so it can get really filled up with grit, but I found that the whole thing cleans up very easily. The locking mechanism for all the tools in the handle works great - you know that nothing is going to close on you accidentally. The only minor flaw I can see are the covers on the handles. They do provide for a nice comfortable grip no matter how hard you are squeezing the pliers. However, they are not necessary for locking the tools out and create an extra step in flipping out and folding away the tools. It seems they could have saved some weight and added some convenience by just rounding or coating the outer edges of the handles for comfort (Leatherman does this on some models). Still it is an all around great tool that should last forever.

SOG Knives PowerLock Multi-Tool

The SOG is a nice multi-tool, but make sure you read the description and don't focus on the picture too much. When I received mine, it was without the 1/4" drive fitting you see in the far right-hand side of the display pic. Not a deal killer, but a little disappointing that BC would use a stock photo instead of the actual item in their advertisements. Also, don't expect the phillips to be uber-useful. It's only a #1. Aside from the above, this thing has a ton of uses. The blades are VERY sharp right out of the box, especially the saw (yikes!). The leather punch is sharp and great for tearing into packages and helps to keep the main blade clean and sharp for when you need it as a blade. The V-cutter is useful as scissors and twine cutter. (I'm still finding uses for this though.) The screwdrivers and file are very useful especially the locking feature. Keeps you from accidentally collapsing the blades on your hand. All in all a good tool that could be made better with a #2 phillips (and more beefy attachment to go along with the #2.) and a little more accurate picture for the ad.

Solid multi-tool

Solid construction, the pliers gear is excellent and the powerLock works reasonably well (you could still fold the knife on your hand if you weren't paying attention). The only drawback is it's very heavy (see also solid) so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for a backcountry trip - for that I would recommend the SOG "Pocket" PowerPlier Multi-Tool(I have the PowerLock and I bought the pocket version as a gift for a friend). The pocket version doesn't have the powerLock or all of tools this one does, but it has the essentials and at 5.5 ounces is almost 50% lighter than this one (not to mention it's cheaper)

Clarification

Bought this on Steep and Cheap. In the list of features there, it says that scissors are included, but they are NOT on the tool with the V-cutter. Just received it, so I can't review too in depth, but it seems like it is very good quality. Pliers function very well, the "blades" all lock, and it feels very solid. But no scissors...

This is a really good multi tool. The only down size is that they are on the bigger size. perfect for car camping or just puting in you car for times of need but would never take it backpacking.

Pick this thing up immediately. It came up on SAC for a ridiculous price, and I couldn't be happier. I needed a multi-tool badly and I'm glad I waited for this one. Design and construction are rock solid. The compound leverage grips tightly, and it includes every tool you could possibly want (scissors would be nice though, but oh well). It's a little heavy, but it's bomber.

Best Multi-Tool Out There

I have found this multi-tool super useful for all sorts of tasks. Be it camping or backpacking of fixing stuff around the house or on the river this tool gets it done. After my brother bent two wire cutters citting some wire at his house I went out to my car and grabbed my SOG. We put it to the test and it clicpped the wire with no trouble at all. Needless

I got this for my brother and played around with it before giving it to him. I have a Leatherman (don't remember the model but comparable in price to this SOG) and the SOG is just plain better built - the engineering and workmanship on the SOG is a lot better IMHO. Within a few moments I could understand why my brother likes his SOGs knives so much - if they are anything like their multi-tools they must be great. Truly a tool I'd feel confident would perform in any situation I might encounter.

Purchased this Multi-Toll for all the right reasons - the features are better than adequate and SOG has the right reputation. The order was expedited quickly as always, but on its first use the Plier head snapped in half with little to no pressure applied while trying to clip a wire!!?? Most disappointing for sure, but SOG Backed it up with no questions asked service - I had to pay to ship it in, but they fixed it and returned it to me within 2 weeks. Note: their multi tools do not carry the same lifetime guarantee/warranty as their other products, and require the receipt-no exceptions. Aside from the delay of getting to enjoy my new tool, its function and price are unbeatable and service was handled well. www.sogknives.com

Awesome tool, but mine did not include the 1/4" drive tool. I would still buy it again (from SAC)

Not quite as pictured/described

By: PG (1)
June 6, 2009

The tools they're shipping (I've bought several) don't include the 1/4" socket drive (shown extending from the end of the upper handle in the pic). Also the description says there are scissors, but there aren't (the pic is correct in this regard). I've notified customer service, but they haven't fixed the pic/description yet. Other than that, I agree with other posters - excellent tool, seems tough, too heavy for backpacking (mine's in my tool kit in my car).

I have owned a SOG multitool for about 10 years. When I saw this one come up on SAC for 40 dollars I had to pick it up. My older SOG is still going strong but is really beat up. This new one works perfectly for fishing. Buy one it will last forever!

Solid Multi-Tool

I really like it and it is solidly built (in the USA). The compound leverage works great and makes it much less of a strain when trying to cut something. The v-cutter is great to use when opening packages or mail, cutting line and anything you can get it at. Getting to everything is a little difficult right now but that just needs some getting used to. Overall, a really good tool and i like how I can open it with one hand.

I have owned both a Gerber and a leatherman multitool and the SOG blows both of them away without question. It is very well made, you can feel the quality when you hold it in your hand. I'm not surprised it's the multitool of choice for Navy EODs.

Bulletproof. Originally purchased in '96 to fill a requirement that students have available at all times a multi-tool (during a half-year diving course at Diver's Institute of Tech, Seattle, WA) that has the following attributes: must be well-made (we used ours BRUTALLY hard), of excellent steel, tough, have diverse applications easliy accessed, and be a real ONE-HANDED OPENING DEVICE. I took this program with a bunch of SeAL's and other professionals in the commercial deep-sea diving industry. When I arrived on campus the first day I simply asked around, "What should I get?" "SOG" was the consistent answer, assuming one could afford it. Back then it was about seventy bucks. It has never left my right hip since. With time, the tool has loosened up in a very good way - the actions become silkier with time, and the steel is top-notch; holds an edge, fiercly sharp, brutally hard - no hint of cost-cutting overseas alloy to the metal. You will know this for exactly what it is the first time you hold it in your hand - it's just feels "right" (I think of it as art in the same way a perfect tool can be a perfect friend.) I just now bought a second pair so I can give one to my brother to keep in his car. In my own experience, those who know use SOG. It's made here in the US, and it is dedicated

gears are nice, but when using the screw driver they can dig into your hand. Would probably buy the tool again if I had the choice, but not designed optimally
