not ideal for long backpacking trips

when you have a lot of gear with you, you really notice the 3 pounds this puppy puts on. I didn't pay attention the weight (over 3 lbs) when I ordered it but realized my mistake when I got in the mail. This will be great for camping and short hikes but for my longer hikes I am going to stick with my extra light Therma-rest.

A must have for tenting it.

decent - not too heavy pad

At 2 lbs 5 oz, the regular pad is reasonably light weight. There are lighter pads out there, but for this price I found it to be a good compromise. Doubles as a sled too.

Light, Comfy, and Cheap

This pad is extremely light and comfortable. I slept on it for a week after I first got it and I have no complaints about the nights I spent on it. The only con about this pad is it is hard to get it rolled back up as small as it was when it first arrived. It is possible but it takes patience I do not have. But overall it is an awesome pad for its price.

I bought 2 of these at a great deal off the SAC site on 1/8/09 and I have to say that they are very comfortable. One poster mentioned that it is hard to roll back up to the form it came in but I disagree - however you have to roll it properly. Open the air valve then fold the mat in half, then half again, then once more squezing our all the air. Close the valve. Roll out the mat again and tightly start to roll the mat. When its near the end, open the valve to start releasing excess air and then close the valve once you reached the end. It will be as close to the factory roll as it can be. However, you don't want it that tight anyway as it will take longer for the mat to self inflate. I needed to blow air manually into mine to get the mat to pop up and then left it inflated so it could "relax" the material.

Great pad, Great Price on Outlet

I ordered both the regular and long. I just recently hiked with the long pad. It's 2" thickness made for the best tent sleeping I have ever had. I used to use the same size pad but a Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest Sleeping Pad" and it was bulkier but lighter and no comparison on comfort. This Lightweight series pad was extremly comfortable. The only issue I could see is how far it sticks out on the sides while packed. It does roll up tight if you take your time to push the air out. The regular was not as tall and would work better as a backpacking pad but I think I will try to use this long version due to the comfort. The reg is only a half inch less thick but over 1.5lbs lighter and easier to pack. Also it did fill up well when I set up camp. Opened the valve and came back to it a hour later and all I had to do is blow a few breaths into it. Later that night I kept letting air out for increased cushion so most likely it will fill itself up to the right ammount of air more my needs. The price on Outlet and SteapandCheap are amazing. I almost want to order another reg in case the long is to big for longer hikes. Get one.

I love this sleeping pad! It is super cozy. Didn't have great expectations at this price- but it is great. I didn't give 5 stars because I thought the sizing was a little weird. The regular is long- i think 6 feet, and it's a little narrow. I am 5'9" and 150 lbs.. Anyone any wider than me, may not like it. It's pretty easy to come off of at night. And you'd have to be really super tall to need the long. But super comfort and value!

I took this pad on a hike of the West Highland Way and was very impressed at the amount of comfort it gave me at night. Not to mention how light it was carrying during the day. Great pad and great price.

Comfy

Took this backpacking. They were super comfy. I did have to blow them up more as the 'self-inflating' feature is just foam. When blown up they were amazing to sleep on. Fairly durable too.

This pad pretty heavy, and I don't know how to say it but not quite as agile as the Therm-a-rest I have. None the less, comfy, and as a bonus feels pretty rugged.

Took this car camping a handful of times. My first impression was that it was a bit thick and heavy, but due to the fact i was not backpacking, it was ok. I did have to inflate a bit in addition to the self inflation. It was very comfortable to sleep on. It is also nice that it came with a storage bag unlike other brands where you have to buy it in addition to the pad.

ALPS Mountaineering Lightweight Series Air Pad

This is a great pad for the price. I us mine for car camping and it is plenty thick for a good nights sleep. It is a little to big and bulky for backpacking but car camping is great. I would recommend storing flat under a bed or back of closet with air plug open so it will inflate easier when you go out.

comfortable but..

this pad was very comfortable. i bought the "regular" size, and it performed well. however, i have two complaints: if you want to roll it up really tightly, you have to "roll" the air out of it about three times in a row, until there is really no air left. (your arms get pretty tired doing that..) the other complaint: in REI the other day, i lay down on the big agnes non-foam pad (whatever it is called..) and it was WAY MORE comfortable. i think i will return this pad and try to switch it for the BA pad, because they are about the same price..

Bulky, but comfortable

By: RockyMtnHigh (65)

This is a decent pad for the price. It is comfortable, inflates well, and comes with its own sack. However, while it is not especially heavy, it is fairly large when rolled up (so that usually you will need to attach it to the outside of your pack). If weight and size are an issue for you (or you have a little extra money to spend) I would find a pad that packs smaller, but if you are on a tight budget (or will only use the pad occasionally, for car camping, or you do not mind the size) this would be hard to beat.

Long Pad Comfortable But Bulky

By: Scott VanderEspt (4)

For a tall guy like myself, its hard to find anything in my length that doesnt cost a freakin' fortune. The Alps lightweight pad is a great buy, especially for all you weekend hikers that dislike sleeping on the forest floor. The 3lbs. isn't too bad, but ultra-lightweight gurus will shun this excess poundage. For someone like myself who spends 2-5 days on the trail, I dont really mind it at all. The one thing that does irk me though is the shear size of the pad when rolled up... its one huge tube! Definitely wont fit in most weekend packs, so you'll have to strap it on the outside, something that kind of scares me cause Im afraid I might snag it on something and tear a hole in it. But Ive been through some brabbly areas already, and so far so good. And like I said; for the price, you can't beat it.

My wife is pregnant with twins and she loves this pad! It's so soft and comfortable. It beats using a yoga mat during Lamaze and any other time she has to be on the floor. Highly recommended. Great price. Get one.

although you do have to deflate this pad once, then roll it up to deflate it again, it's worth having a lightweight full length pad. I also have to blow air in manually to get it completely inflated, but once again, for the price, this pad is worth it. it is a bit long when rolled up which makes it a task of fitting in a good spot in your pack. good pad for the price.

Been using this pad for a couple of seasons and haven't had a problem. Priced right. A little on the heavy side, but that comes with durability.
